CPAP Battery Guide: Choose Backup Power

Choose a CPAP battery around your machine, cable, comfort settings and recharge access. Compare capacity and travel limits before buying.

Start with the machine, not the battery

Our recommendation: choose a CPAP battery only after you know the machine, the correct DC cable, and whether you will use the humidifier or heated hose. Those comfort features usually change runtime more than the logo on the battery.

Runtime depends on the complete setup, not capacity alone. Heated humidification and heated tubing can add substantial demand. Keep a manufacturer specification, a customer’s documented experience and a calculator example separate: none automatically predicts your own night.

Start by writing down your exact CPAP model and checking its approved power instructions. Before sleeping on an unfamiliar setup, perform a short check while awake with reliable power ready to restore. This guide concerns CPAP/APAP backup planning, not life-support equipment or a professional backup plan for someone who cannot safely tolerate an interruption.

The four details that decide the purchase

Before choosing a battery, answer four questions: Which CPAP do you own? Which cable does it require? Will heated humidification or heated tubing stay on? How many hours must the battery cover before you can recharge?

Capacity alone does not answer those questions. A 99.9Wh battery can be the sensible choice for a flight, while a 297.6Wh battery can be the better choice for repeated outages. The larger pack is not automatically “better”; a 297.6Wh spare battery is outside the ordinary passenger-baggage limits discussed here.

There is one more boundary to know: EASYLONGER CPAP batteries provide DC output. They do not have a 110V household outlet. If you want to plug in the CPAP’s normal wall adapter, you are shopping for a power station or a separate inverter setup, not a direct-DC CPAP battery.

Do not turn this table into a nights guarantee. Decide how many hours you need, include the required reserve, and establish the load of your own setup. ES720 PRO is a separate 276.48Wh model; do not substitute its specifications for the standard 266.4Wh ES720.

Use the runtime calculator with an appropriate average-power input for your setup. Its default is not a measured value for your machine. Compare the result with your required operating hours and a safely validated run; aging, temperature, leaks and shared loads can change the outcome.

Why direct DC is usually the cleaner CPAP setup

A CPAP ultimately needs DC power. With the correct direct-DC cable, the battery sends the required voltage to the machine without first creating household AC and then converting it back to DC. That usually means fewer conversion steps and fewer parts to troubleshoot.

The current calculator separates an illustrative 18% conversion/system allowance from a further 15% planning reserve. For example, a 297.6Wh pack at an assumed average 12W gives 297.6 × 0.82 ÷ 12 ≈ 20.3 hours before that reserve, or about 17.3 planning hours after it. This is arithmetic for an assumed load, not an AirSense, DreamStation or AirMini test, a measured efficiency, or a safety guarantee. Do not double-count heated accessories if they are already included in a measured average load.

Battery chemistry is model-specific: ES960 and ES960 PRO are listed as LiFePO4, while the smaller families are listed as lithium-ion. Do not transfer one model’s cycle-life claim to another. Chemistry is one ownership factor; capacity, travel limits, cable fit and recharge access still decide whether a model fits your trip.

Run this test before the outage or trip

1. Read the label on the CPAP power supply

Record the full model, not just the brand. Distinguish the source-side input from the power delivered to the CPAP: AirSense 11 and AirMini use a 24V device supply; DreamStation 2 uses a nominal 12V device supply. React Luna TravelPAP uses 19V; its vehicle converter accepts 12/24V upstream. Other Luna models need their own labels checked. These values alone do not establish a compatible cable or sufficient current.

2. Charge the battery fully

Use the charging method specified for the exact battery version and input port. Follow its full-charge indication and storage instructions; a coarse battery bar is not a calibrated energy meter.

3. Connect the CPAP through the correct DC cable

Choose one documented route. A CPAP manufacturer’s vehicle converter is not the same product as an EASYLONGER-specified compatibility cable. Confirm the battery model and port, cable identity, both input/output ratings, polarity, connector identification and continuous-power capability. A USB-C port, matching plug shape or matching voltage alone is not approval. For an EASYLONGER cable, its compatibility statement comes from EASYLONGER, not an implied ResMed or Philips endorsement. If the complete combination is unclear, ask support before connecting it.

4. Check while awake before extending the test

Keep prescription pressure unchanged. First check startup and stable airflow while awake, with the normal power supply ready and no need to wait for the battery to run flat. Extend testing only where interruption can be safely managed and a reliable fallback remains available. Record operating time, humidifier and heated-tube settings, other loads and the indicator reading. Comfort changes must follow device and treatment guidance; if the required settings need more energy, choose more capacity or a reliable recharge plan.

5. Troubleshoot one variable at a time

If the CPAP stops or airflow is abnormal, follow the device’s mask and shutdown instructions and restore reliable power first. Do not remain in a nonfunctioning mask while diagnosing, and do not try alternative voltages by trial and error. Our simple buying rule

  • Choose ES270 when passenger air travel is the main constraint.
  • Choose ES400 AIR when you need more flight reserve and can obtain airline approval.
  • Choose ES720 for camping or home backup when flying is not part of the plan.
  • Choose ES960 or ES960 PRO when repeated outages and longer reserve matter more than size and airline use.

Official-site purchases include a five-year warranty. Purchases from other authorized platforms include three years, with eligible coverage upgraded to five years after registration on the EASYLONGER website, subject to the posted terms and purchase verification.

Before checkout, confirm the exact battery/cable/CPAP combination and current contents on the product page. For flights, check every operating carrier: carry spare batteries in the cabin with terminals protected; airline approval is required above 100Wh up to 160Wh, and the usual larger-spare limit is two. Carriage permission does not authorize in-flight operation of every CPAP or cable. The ResMed Air11 and AirMini vehicle DC/DC converters are not intended for aircraft use; this is a restriction on those converters, not a blanket judgment on all third-party cables.

Questions we would settle before buying

Can I leave the humidifier on?

Yes, if your setup and capacity support it. Expect much shorter runtime. If humidity or a heated hose is important for comfort, plan the battery around that setting instead of assuming you will turn it off later.

Can I use my normal wall adapter?

Not directly with an EASYLONGER CPAP battery because these models do not have a 110V AC outlet. Use the correct DC cable.

Does a bigger watt-hour number always mean a better choice?

No. Airline limits, weight and recharge access matter. ES270 is often the practical flight choice even though ES960 has more reserve.

Can I run other devices at the same time?

You can use supported outputs, but every extra load shortens CPAP runtime. Test the combined setup rather than adding device wattages from memory.

Is pass-through charging the same as a medical UPS?

No. A model-supported pass-through arrangement can accept charge while supplying a load. It does not by itself specify a zero-interruption transfer time; the battery may still discharge when the load exceeds input. Check the exact ports and instructions, then test safely while awake with reliable fallback power. Do not substitute it for a professionally specified backup system.

How often should I recharge a stored battery?

Follow the storage temperature, charge level and maintenance interval in the manual for your exact battery version. Recharge after use as directed and check readiness before a trip or storm; do not assume one interval applies to every model.
